We really have great intentions. We mean well. We know that we want more. We know that some things need to change.
Yet, something is holding us back. Something causes us to not take action. Something keeps us stuck…right where we are. And things never seem to change.
What you may ask?
It’s our STORIES! The things that we tell ourselves!
I can’t lose weight…
I could never do that…
I’m not smart enough…
I’m too fat…
These stories are the very things that weigh us down and slow down our progress. They keep us from moving beyond where we are now to where we want to be. They keep us unhappy and unfulfilled.
Although these stories may have some truth, they also have some lies. The lies are the parts of the story that we’ve made up. Even if some part of the story is true today. The lies are the interpretations that we’ve made that limit our growth. Sometimes in the form of excuses for pity or sympathy.
The stories we tell ourselves, have been a way for us to hide from the truth. The truth of who we really are. The truth of what we really want. They prevent us from moving forward. As a result we don’t accomplish our goals. We don’t have the things we want. We don’t live in our purpose. We don’t take action. We stay exactly where we are knowing it’s not where we want to be. Knowing that we deserve more. Knowing that we are better. Knowing that we have bigger goals and dreams for ourselves and our family.
As with anything in life there is no quick fix. In many cases these stories are deeply ingrained in us. Some have been with us since childhood and we’ve carried them into adulthood.
However, as with anything there is something that you can do. TODAY!
Start by listening to the stories that are on repeat in your head. What are the things that you tell yourself on a continuous basis?
How does it make your feel? Is it a familiar feeling? Do you feel good? Safe?
Recognize the part of the story that is a lie and is hindering you from moving forward.
How do you separate truth from lies?
Truth is empowering. It makes you feel good. It picks you up. It makes you feel like you are capable of any and every thing.
Lies are dis-empowering. The make you feel bad. They make you feel sad. They make you feel helpless and hopeless. They make you feel like you are less than. They make you feel incapable.
Decide. How willing are you to let the old story go so that you can move forward?
How can you rewrite the story in a new empowering way?
Decide that the story is no longer serving you and set an intention to LET IT GO.
Let me put this into perspective for you.
You walk around every day complaining about how fat you are. Sometimes even making excuses. I can’t go to the gym. I’m too busy. I can’t afford it. Then you look for sympathy. Well you know I have knee problems. You know I’m on high blood pressure medicine. I need to be careful. As a result you do nothing besides complain about it. It makes you sad and depressed. You pretend that it doesn’t bother you that much. Sometimes you even eat more because of your feelings. It’s a familiar story. This story is easier, comfortable and safe. Or is it? Because deep down you really want something different for yourself.
Can you see the truth and the lies? Yeah, you may have some extra fat. But, you weren’t born fat. You didn’t wake up one day suddenly fat. Even if you have some physical limitations there is something that you can do. There is always something that you can do. It’s a choice. Are you able to see how dis-empowering the statement I’m fat is? It does nothing to uplift or encourage you.
First you’ll need a new story. How about…yes I have some extra weight that I am taking steps to change? How much better does that feel? How about…I’m working to get healthier every day and release extra weight?
Here’s another example.
I can’t do that. Usually that’s followed by a whole bunch of reasons why. And some excuses as well. If you really believe that you can’t do something then what do you think happens? You won’t!
Why can’t you? Who told you that you can’t? It doesn’t even matter. You are capable of doing, being and accomplishing anything you want. It all starts with a change in perspective. A new story. A new belief. How about…I’m figuring out how to do that. I’m working on a solution. I can do and achieve anything I want.
The reality is the only limitations are the limitations we create.
This is how the shift begins. Every time you catch yourself telling the same story, replace it with your new empowering one. Think about what you ultimately want and shift your focus and energy to that.
Take action. Do something different. Change something. Commit to something new. Then watch how things begin to shift for you and you begin to move your life forward.
It all comes down to choice. What’s your new story?
Are you ready to dig deeper into the things that are hindering you? Are you ready to move past what’s holding you back? Are you ready to see your bigger goals and dreams come to fruition?

If you tripped and fell on the ground and someone walking by runs to offer a hand to help you up. Would you slap the hand away? Or, would you grab that hand and express thanks? Often times when we ask for help and support, a hand is offered to assist. But sometimes we just shove it away. Or we keep struggling on our own. The helping hand cannot do anything to help us if we aren’t at least willing to reach out and take what’s being offered. Invest in yourself. You deserve it!
